Betsy Sokol

Bette Lynn Sokol (Betsy Sokol), 68, passed away at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas on December 8th, 2014, from complications related to leukemia. This was Betsy’s third bout with cancer, previously surviving colon cancer and bone cancer. Betsy was a vibrant wife, mother, grandmother, sister and daughter. She took every curveball that life handed her was able to meet it with a joke and laugh and overcome all challenges. Betsy was a superwoman who fought cancer for 17 years and won daily. Betsy was born November 23, 1946, in McAlister, Oklahoma, and grew up in Hartshorne, Oklahoma. She is the daughter of the late Buddy Miller and Mary Miller Shann. Betsy has been married to her husband Don Sokol for 44 years. She is survived by her husband Don; three children - Bob Sokol, David Sokol and Jill Cannon; grandchildren - Kaylee Carter Sokol, Laurel Sokol, Mara Cannon and Emily Sokol; son-in-law John Cannon; daughters-in-law - Stephanie Sokol and Jessie Sokol; her sister Carolyn Dollins and her brother Dr. Kenneth Miller; sisters-in-law Nancy Sokol, wife of the late Ron Sokol, Geneva Miller and Gail Bellmyer; nieces and nephews – Stephen Miller, Michael Miller, Jeffrey Miller, Teri Mitchell, Jack Dollins II, Shali Lay, Stephen Sokol, Brian Sokol, and Eric Sokol; and 11 grand nieces and nephews; 1st cousins – Virginia Thornton, Jimmy Miller, Kay Mackelberg, Bill Hall, Nancy Petrie Armstrong, Don Trammell, Mike Van Straten, Chris Van Straten, Jim Schaller, Jerry Schaller, Joan Schaller Taylor, Pat Scifres, Jack Petrie Jr., Shirley Ogilvie, Becky Bouchard, Kay Osborn and Tim Diehl;. Betsy graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1970 with a degree in fashion merchandising and home economics. She has held various positions during her career in retail and human resources. Betsy’s and Don’s home is in Sugar Land, Texas. Prior to that they lived in Denver, CO, Traverse City, MI, The Meadows, TX, Bakersfield, CA, and Tulsa, OK. Betsy’s hobbies included sewing (she was a super seamstress), reading, crocheting and following the Oklahoma Sooners. Betsy was a wonderful sweet and loving mother and wife. Everybody that met Betsy loved her. She was a friend to all and her strength and positive attitude to overcome adversity and live life to the most was an inspiration to all that knew her. Betsy will be buried on Wednesday, December 17th at Rolling Oaks Cemetery, 4300 East 91st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Graveside services will be at 1:30 PM. Visitation will be from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM before the graveside service at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel, 3612 East 91st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma. For information please call 918-291-3500.
