Donald Reid Inbody, M.D.

Donald Reid Inbody was born October 14, 1930 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to J. Roy and Billie Inbody. He passed away peacefully on June 18, 2017. Don graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1948, later attending the University of Tulsa, graduating with a B.S. He attended the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, where he received his M.D. Following an internship, he completed a three-year residency in Psychiatry at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in New York City. It was at St. Vincent’s that he met a beautiful nurse named Mary Sullivan. She was the love of his life and they were marred in 1959. The young couple resided in Manhattan, where they welcomed their first born, Christopher, in 1961. They moved to Zama, Japan, where Don was a Captain in the U.S. Army, and welcomed their second child, Laura, in 1962. They returned to New York, and the family was complete with the addition of Brian in 1964. In 1970, Don moved the young family to his hometown, Tulsa, where he continued his psychiatry practice until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the Oklahoma State Medical Association, and the Tulsa County Medical Society. His life focused on family, friends, and the care of his patients. He was a constant supporter of his children in all their activities and endeavors. He and Mary enjoyed the hundreds of nights and dozens of trips they shared with a close-knit group of friends. He provided wise counsel and genuine friendship to his patients – some of whom became and remained lifelong friends. After retirement, Don was an active volunteer at Neighbor for Neighbor, Catholic Charities Medical Clinic, Xavier Clinic, and the Jenks Southeast Elementary School Library. He continued as an active volunteer until recent health setbacks. He and Mary were people of deep faith and were active members at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for over 40 years. Don was lucky enough to have a 51-year love affair. Mary passed away in 2010 and until recent weeks, when his health no longer allowed, he visited her gravesite every day of every year. He is survived by his son Chris Inbody and wife Julie of Oklahoma City, his daughter Laura Peterson of Salt Lake City, and his son Brian Inbody and wife Elizabeth of Tulsa. He is survived by his grandchildren Elizabeth Pennell and husband Nick, Jennifer Keeney and husband Matt, Blake and Anne-Marie Peterson, Brice, Megan, Brooks, and Liza Inbody, and great grandchildren Kannon Peterson and Lincoln Pennell. Don will be remembered for his quick wit and sharp intellect. He enjoyed a good conversation, a good laugh, and a good glass of scotch. He had an incredible desire for knowledge, taking literature and history courses at TU for years after his retirement. His appetite for books was obvious to anyone who entered his library. Don had many interests, but above all, his focus was his family. On his passing, we are inspired by him and his zest for life, faith, friends and family. Visitation 3-5, Wednesday, June 21 at the Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel. Rosary will be held 7:00 pm Wednesday, June 21 in the Marian Chapel at the Church of St. Mary, and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, June 22 at the Church of St. Mary, 1347 E. 49th Place, Tulsa, OK. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Tulsa. Thanks Dad for showing us how to live a purposeful, faithful, and meaningful life. Cheers.
