Edith Hydrick

Edith Norene Hydrick, affectionately known as "Freckles" by her beloved husband, Bill, and cherished as "Nana" by many, passed away on Tuesday, September 19th, 2023. She was 97. Edith is preceded in death by her parents, Altie and Fred McGrew; her siblings, Gertie Battles, Kitty Wayne Hutchison, George McGrew, and Bonnie Miller; and her beloved Bill. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Shroff; her son, Dave Hydrick; her grandchildren, Amy Davis and husband Mark, Carrie Jones and husband Wade, Michael Shroff, Matthew Shroff, Katie Ginder and husband Chris, and Luke Hydrick and wife Katie; her great grandchildren, Hannah Davis, Samantha Davis, Edie Jones, Xander Davis, Lucy Ginder, Paul Ginder, and Peter Ginder; her "Arkansas Granddaughter", Jamie Henry, and husband Tom and their children; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews all over the South. On May 12th, 1926 Edith was born in Senath, MO. She grew up on a farm where her Daddy taught her about cotton farming and her mother shared the arts of gardening and sewing. In the spring of 1948, Edith and Bill moved from Memphis to Tulsa. Bill, among other veterans and young aviation mechanics, was hired by American Airlines at the newly opened plant in Tulsa. It was during this time that Edith began her lifelong habit of making a warm and welcoming home for family and friends. Her dedication to her family was unwavering, and she was very involved in her children's activities. She was a homeroom mother at Celia Clinton Elementary School where she met her lifelong best friend, Midge. She also served as a Cub Scout and Brownie leader. While Bill coached Dave's little league baseball team, the Clinton Comets, Edith helped organize and keep score. She also sewed beautiful costumes for Kathy's dance recitals. Edith loved dogs, both her own and everyone else's. She gave treats to the neighborhood dogs over the fence or while out for an evening walk. She loved doing cross-stitch needlework and was an excellent seamstress. She delighted in making flannel baby blankets and clothes for her grandbabies. Edith worked for several years at Will Rogers Fabric Store as a fabric clerk and in button sales where she provided beautiful products for her loyal customers. Edith was a wonderful cook and took great pleasure in making her kids', grandkids', great grandkids', and all their friends' favorite dishes. She was famous for her delicious lemon cake. She had a knack for finding thrift store bargains and was an avid OU football fan. She loved traveling to Hawaii with her Bill and their friends and also loved spending time at Jamie and Tom's orchard in Arkansas. She was a country girl at heart, an excellent gardener, and loved planting flowers for her patio every spring. This spring, she planted 15 pots of flowers and delighted in the butterflies and hummingbirds that came to visit. Edith's greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was immensely proud of each and every one. She loved telling her family the stories and history of her life. She often reminded her family how blessed she felt to have had a wonderful life filled with love and marvelous experiences, and how grateful she was for her beautiful family. Edith's Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at Unity Center of Tulsa, 1830 South Boston Avenue on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 at 3:00 pm.
