Harry E. Livingston, M.D.

Harry Earl Livingston, M.D., born in Richmond, Virginia on January 27, 1934 to David I. Livingston and Johnnie Williams Livingston. After a short time in Richmond the family moved to New Orleans. During WWII the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia where Dr. Livingston received his education having attended grammar school, high school, Emory University undergraduate college, and medical school. He graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in 1957. He served as an intern from 1957-1958 and a year of General Surgery residency from 1958-1959 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Next, he entered the US Army as a Captain and served two years at Fort Gordon, Georgia in the Surgery Department. Following active duty, he moved to Knoxville, Tennessee for an Orthopedic fellowship at the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital. During this time, he served in the Ready Army Reserve as a medical company commander, reaching the rank of Major. While at the University Hospital he met his future wife, Sandra Owen; they were married in 1964. After finishing training in Orthopedics, they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. In Tulsa they became parents to five children. In 1967 Dr. Livingston became board certified in Orthopedic Surgery, and in 1969 he became a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was on staff of multiple hospitals in Tulsa doing most of his practice at St. Francis Hospital. After seven years in solo practice he was joined by Dr. James Donald Keenan when they formed Orthopedic Specialists of Tulsa in 1972. They added more surgeons until 1995 when they merged with another group to form Central States Orthopedic Specialists, which had sixteen board certified Orthopedic surgeons. That group has continued to thrive and grow over the years to become one of the premier and largest Orthopedic groups in this part of the country. Dr. Livingston was a member of several medical organizations including the Tulsa County Medical Society, the Oklahoma State Medical Society, the Mid-Central States Orthopedic Society, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Tulsa Orthopedic Society (past president), and the Oklahoma State Orthopedic Society (past president). He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Tulsa and the Rotary District 6110 Medical Supplies Network, which collects surplus medical supplies and distributes them all over the world. In the mid-1990s Dr. Livingston, of Lithuanian heritage, personally sponsored and led a team to Kaunas, Lithuania where they introduced total knee replacements. He brought four Lithuanian surgeons to Tulsa for advanced training in Orthopedic Surgery. Through the Medical Supplies Network, ten sea containers of medical supplies were shipped to Lithuania which provided the necessary tools to introduce orthopedic and neurosurgical innovations. After retiring from full time practice in December 2000, Dr. Livingston continued to be active part time, doing locum tenens, assisting in surgery in Tulsa, and running outpatient Orthopedic clinics at the Muskogee Veterans Hospital and the St. Francis Xavier Clinic in Tulsa. Dr. Livingston was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Leo Wayne Livingston, and half-brothers Barnard Livingston and Dr. Ralph Livingston. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, and their five children: John Owen Livingston (wife Lori) of Tulsa; Mark Edward Livingston (wife Nancy) of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Michael Robert Livingston (Vesta Valuckaite, M.D.) of Chicago; Melissa Anne Livingston (husband Paul Oglesby) of Austin, Texas; and Jeffrey Blake Livingston (wife Melissa) of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Morgan and Owen Livingston of Tulsa; Harrison and Hatten Livingston of Hattiesburg; Reid and Cole Livingston of San Mateo, CA (children of Michael Livingston and Flynn Carlisle Livingston); and Ruby and Lana Livingston of Austin.
