John D. "Jack" Buthod

John D. “Jack” Buthod passed away December 12, 2012, a loved and respected man. Jack was the second son of the late Charles P. and Beulah Butler Buthod, both early Oklahoma educators. Jack is predeceased by his brother Paul Buthod and baby daughter Maureen. He is survived by wife, Rosaleen Craig; children Barbara MacCallum (Dale), Diane Burton, Don Buthod (Virginia), Craig Buthod (Tomese), Richard Buthod (Ellen), Therese Buthod (Randy Stell), Michele Kidson (Roger), Anne Marie Tobiasz (Todd), Lee Trahan (Keith), Ty Buthod (Laura) and Tim Buthod ; and much younger sisters Mary Rose Grummer and Helen (John) Hayes, sisters-in-law Dr. Nancy Craig of OKC, Sr. Maureen Craig of Santa Monica and Jean Craig of Malibu. He took great pride in his 21 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. A life-long Tulsan, Jack graduated from Marquette High School and the University of Tulsa. Jack cultured his strong work ethic selling Collier’s Magazine for pocket money as a boy and became a CPA at the age of 19. Before joining the Army for WWII, Jack taught at TU and worked for Essman Insurance Company. The end of the war brought Jack back from England, France and Germany to work for Wolfe Drilling Company and to later marry Rosaleen and start his family. In 1960 Jack moved to Producers Oil Company, where he remained for 30 years. A devoted father, he shared his love of books with his children by reading bedtime stories and poems. Ogden Nash was a favorite. He always managed to find books that appealed to his entire audience. Dates with Daddy were a favorite with all 11 children. During summer vacations Jack invited each child to choose a favorite place to go on Friday nights. They took turns from oldest to youngest. When traveling in the car for any length of time, he made a game of asking age appropriate questions to each child. Years later, Tim, his youngest, won a similar game on TV called Jeopardy. Another favorite family activity was going to Sunday Mass followed by breakfast at Bishop’s on the long banquette in the dining room. It was a pleasant way to teach the children how to act in public in a friendly atmosphere. A loyal friend, Jack kept in touch with friends he made in the army through his late 80’s. Jack and Rosaleen were in the same dinner group for over 40 years. He served on school boards at both Marquette and Monte Cassino. Jack was an active member of Saint Francis and later, Christ the King Catholic churches. Jack and Rosaleen were able to travel more after the children had grown. During his retirement, he volunteered at the Better Business Bureau, the American Cancer Society, and both VITA and AARP preparing taxes for those who could not pay for the service. He was a consistent blood donor to the American Red Cross. His intelligence, quick wit and generosity will be fondly remembered by those who were fortunate enough to have known him. The Rosary will be said 7:00 p.m., Thursday at Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m.,Friday, December 14, 2012, at Christ the King Catholic Church.
