Obituary

Dr. Alvin U. Bielefeld embodied a life of service. He was born in Chicago in 1935. He died last Thursday after a brief battle with aggressive liver cancer. Five weeks ago, his oncologist gave him a grim prognosis. He wasn't afraid to die; he knew the 86 years he spent on earth was time well spent. Fearless Peace Corps volunteer, English professor and architect of the OU English department, resolute patriot who served in the National Guard and retired from the Army as a Master Sergeant, scrupulous problem solver, contemplative counselor, patient and adoring husband, protective brother, generous and caring father.

My father believed in the innate good of all human beings. He never spoke ill of anyone. He quietly reminded us everyday that we can and should do better.

"Well done good and faithful servant!" Matthew 25: 21
