Obituary
Ann Bartlett was born November 9, 1920. She died Saturday, January 26, 2013.
Ann was born in Seattle, Washington. Her parents were Edgar and Joan Smith. During WWII, Ann met her future husband, Dewey, while she was taking care of her Grandmother in Doheny Park, California. She met him at a dance for the Marine officers of El Toro Marine Base and they became engaged 3 weeks and 3 days later. Dewey left for 18 months to fly the SBD dive bomber in the South Pacific. In her own words she said "everyone was crazy about Dewey". They married April 2, 1945 at San Juan Capistrano in California.
Dewey and Ann Bartlett settled in Tulsa where Dewey and his brother David worked for and managed Keener Oil Company. They raised 3 children and taught them the benefits of hard work, public service and individual achievement.
Dewey became involved in politics and Ann was at his side as he campaigned in Tulsa and later throughout the state. While Dewey was Governor of Oklahoma from 1967 to 1971 and U.S. Senator from 1973 to 1979, Ann took her role as Oklahoma's First Lady and Senator's wife seriously. She involved herself in organizations and actions concerned with children's causes, Native American Indians, the poor, the environment, social and justice concerns, and health.
She will be remembered for her charm, warm sense of humor, love of laughter, her dignity in easy times and difficult times, her love of family and friends, and her love of nature.
Ann was easy to love and hard to let go.
Ann was predeceased by her brother Brent, nephew Brent, cousin Joan Wilt, her husband Dewey Bartlett and 2nd husband John Burke.
She leaves behind her children Dewey Bartlett and wife Victoria, Joanie Atkinson and husband Tom, and Mike Bartlett; grandchildren Dewey Bartlett III, Ann Bennett, Andrea Brown, Annie Atkinson, Kate Jennemann, and Kimberly Bartlett; great-granddaughter Lola Jennemann; sister Constance Smith of Anacortes, WA and cousin Alice Koch of Bainbridge Island, WA.
Prayer Service will be Thursday, 7:00 p.m., and Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, 10:00 a.m., both at Christ the King Church, Tulsa.
