Betty Ann Garan Tschappat Jacobs was born in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, at home on a dairy farm on June 11, 1930. She shares her birthday with her youngest daughter, Susan Lynn. When she was in the hospital with Susan she asked if she would be getting a birthday cake and they replied, 'no'. She asked again if she could just have a cupcake and again, they would not oblige her since she just had a newborn. As a result, in subsequent years she very much enjoyed white on white birthday cake with her family. Her immediate family included her mother Margaret, father Thomas, and siblings, Mary, Thomas, David, and Dorothy.
Growing up she would get up early to milk the cows or do other needed farm chores. Then, she would walk two miles to catch the school bus to Mount Pleasant School.
One time she won the class Christmas tree and walked home carrying it all the way. And, she was admired for having perfect attendance in school and became the class Salutatorian.
After high school she attended Eliot's School of Business in Wheeling, West Virginia, from January until November 1949, where she had perfect scores on her work. For just a few years she worked in a hospital's accounting department. Next up was working at an accounting firm where she met Siegel Louis Tschappat, Jr. a cost accountant after his World War II service. They married on August 9,1952, and had Phyllis Anne Tschappat Ogilvie, the following August. They had moved to New Philadelphia/Dover, Ohio. Three years later they were blessed with Margaret Lou (Peggy) Tschappat Reynolds. And, a year later had Susan Lynn Tschappat.
Mother focused on the family and made sure we were well taken care of by great cooking and spending large amounts of time with us, talking with us, reading, shopping, and playing with us. She returned to part-time work in 1968, at L. A. King Corporation, again, in accounting. Over time, she became Secretary/Treasurer of the company and was known to 'wear many hats' to assist with the company's success. After the owner, Jack Jacobs lost his wife and 6 months later, when dad passed, he started dating mother a year later. Fifteen years later, they were married in Arkansas at Jack's alma mater, and built a lovely life together. They enjoyed travel to Russia and even got lost in the Hermitage and were rescued by her brother David and his wife Dorothy. Other trips included France, Spain, and the Baltic countries. They owned a beautiful country French Grand Lake home for 22 wonderful years and enjoyed it year-round for the lake view and beautiful fall colors. They also enjoyed the Yale, OK, Ranch together and their mid-town Tulsa home that included a precious Wheaten Terrier named Phoebe who brought much joy and happiness to their life and at times were their eyes and ears. Of course, they loved all the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren on both sides of the family and were happy to cook for them or enjoy a delicious dinner out.
Throughout her life, Mother was known to be up early and had a reputation as a hard worker. Mother will be greatly missed, and no other person will be able to replace her kindness, great listening skills, and her sincere compliments that helped us all to be successful in life in many ways. She remains in our hearts forever and we will see her again with that wonderful smile. Glory be to God.
