Obituary

Beverley Broneldia Shearing, age 78, passed away on November 25, 2017, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, surrounded by her family, following a short illness.

Born on November 28, 1938, in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, to Edward and Gladys (Smith) Herrington, Beverley and her parents moved to Toronto when she was a young child.

Beverley married John (Jack) Wallace Shearing on February 23, 1956, in Toronto. Beverley and Jack had two daughters, Lisa-Gaye (Shearing) Mead and Lorraine (Shearing) Peters. They lived in the Toronto area–Scarborough and Thornhill–and moved to Tulsa in 1984.

Beverley was a homemaker, close to her parents and grandparents, and devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, and beloved pets, including Midnight, Cocoa, Rambeau and Daisy. A contestant in beauty pageants when she was younger, Beverley took to Oklahoma like a Southern belle. She excelled at playing bridge with the Tulsa Newcomers and Tulsa New Towners clubs, enjoyed studying antiques with the Tulsa Questors–the "Eclectors"–and was president of her Investment Club. She and Jack enjoyed their cabin on Grand Lake's Monkey Island and loved to travel. A master storyteller, she regaled the family with entertaining stories from her extensive reading and about her life. Beverley loved to laugh and loved her husband dearly for his sense of humor.

Despite suffering a severe stroke in 2010, Beverley joined the celebration at daughter Lorraine's 2012 wedding. She and Jack were the longest-married couple attending and led one of the wedding dances. Beverley and Jack met at a dance at the Balmy Beach Canoe Club in Toronto and celebrated their 61-year wedding anniversary in 2017.

Beverley is survived by Jack, their daughters, Lisa-Gaye (Michael) Mead of Joplin, Missouri, and Lorraine (Robert) Peters of Chicago, Illinois, and their grandchildren, Spencer and Julianne Mead of Joplin, Missouri. She was predeceased by her parents, her maternal grandparents, Charles and Broneldia (Southworth) Smith, and her paternal grandparents, R. John and Mary (Sawyer) Herrington, all of Ontario, Canada.

A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Beverley and her laugh, vivacity, and sparkle will be greatly missed but treasured, and her stories will live on.

Visitation will take place from 5pm-7pm, Wednesday, November 29, and a funeral will be held at 11am, Thursday, November 30, both at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Burial will be held at a later date at Highland Memory Gardens in Willowdale (Toronto). Flowers are welcome. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
