Obituary

Carolyn Kay Vandaveer Shead was born September 8, 1945 in Oklahoma City to Ralph and Helen Vandaveer. She passed quietly on October 6, 2015, after a year-long battle with cancer at St. John's Hospital in the company of her family.

As a young teenager, Carolyn spent much of her free time competing in pairs roller skating dancing. She paid for her hobby from the proceeds of her cake business, making up to 3 or 4 layer cakes from scratch every evening. After seeing the 1959 movie "Pillow Talk," Carolyn dreamed of becoming an interior designer just like the Doris Day character, Jan Morrow. Carolyn graduated from Ulysses S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City in 1963, and continued on to the University of Oklahoma where she received her BA in interior design. After college she attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City to continue her education in the arts. She moved to Tulsa in 1970 and went to work for a local design firm before starting her own business.

Carolyn met her husband David in 1975, after crossing paths unknowingly throughout their lives (they lived only blocks apart as children, attended the same art classes at OU and Carolyn knew David's father Robert, also an interior designer), it only seems fitting that they spent 39 wonderful years together. David and Carolyn had one daughter, Laura, whom they raised in a home of laughter and love. Carolyn was the model of motherhood, giving everything of herself to her only child, and for that, her daughter is eternally grateful. She was a devoted mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was so many things to so many people, her sprit and light will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her father Ralph Vandaveer, and her mother Helen Vandaveer. She is survived by her husband, David Laforge Shead; daughter, Laura Kay Shead; brother, Phillip Bryan Vandaveer; and many nieces and nephews.
