Claudine "Dene" Shofner Barnes Spalding
Spalding, Barnes, Claudine ne. Shofner, known to many as "Dene" was born September 21, 1922, in Tulsa, OK, died April 7, 2015 in Tulsa, OK. She graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1940. From 1941 to 1945, she was a civilian employee for the Air Force Technical Training Command in Oklahoma, North Carolina, Texas, and Colorado. In 1946, she was employed by Service Pipe Line Company, Tulsa, and retired as secretary to the president in 1964 to attend the University of Tulsa, College of Law, attaining a LL.B in December, 1967. She was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar in February 1968. She promptly entered private practice with her husband, L. Edgar Barnes, who predeceased her in 1986. In 1969, she accepted a three month temporary appointment as deputy law clerk to the Chief Judge, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Oklahoma, and remained for ten years, seven years of which she served as a United States Magistrate. The last ten years of her legal career were with the Office of the Regional Solicitor, U.S. Department of the Interior, Tulsa, retiring in 1988 as Assistant Regional Solicitor. January 2, 1988, she married the late John Victor Spalding, he died in 2004, and she is survived by a step-family of four children and their spouses, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was a senior member of the Oklahoma and Tulsa County Bar Associations, active in the Women's Association of the Tulsa Boy's Home, Women's Activities at Southern Hills Country Club, and, a convert to Catholicism, the Church of Saint Mary. In lieu of flowers, it is requested contributions be made to Tulsa Boy's Home or the charity of your choice. Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Church of Saint Mary, interment at Rose Hill Mausoleum.
