Obituary

Dale Whitten, veteran, age 89, made his journey home on September 18, 2017. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday at Memorial Baptist Church, Tulsa, OK. Born in Duncan, Oklahoma he was the only child of Robert and Leone Whitten. Growing up during the great depression he had a wonderful childhood, despite economic limitations. After moving to Sioux City, Iowa he graduated from Central High. While a senior, he won the Iowa State Debate Championship. After entering the Army, he was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington, then to Fort Sam Houston to attend the Army School of X-Ray where he stayed as an instructor until his discharge in 1947. He then attended and graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Returning to Oklahoma, he entered the O.U. School of Law. He graduated, passed the bar, and was sworn in on July 15, 1952. The next day he started work for the Standard Insurance Company in Tulsa.
Good fortune shined on him and he married Roberta Smalling in 1953. In 1960, Roberta suddenly became ill and died on Christmas Day. Fortune comes and goes. It returned in 1963 when he married Carol Sylvester. He told all who would listen, "I married Carol and lived happily ever after."
In 1968 he formed a new law firm with Dale McDaniel. Eventually this evolved into a seven person law firm, limiting its practice to the defense of Workers' Compensation Litigation. Dale was always active in his profession. He served on the Executive Council of the Tulsa County Bar, several committees including the Grievance Committee, as well as the Tulsa Delegates to the House and Senate. This group brought about great changes in Workers' Compensation.
His activities were not limited to his profession. As a longtime member of Southside Rotary Club, he served in various positions, to include President. One of the original members of Philcrest Hills Tennis Club, Dale served as President for a term. He was a tennis player who played only doubles. At his best he thought he could never be more than average but won more than he lost. He has said he won so much because of Calvin Vogt, his partner for 40 years, who could run down 9 out of 10 lobs! He was an avid reader and worked out at Dr. Frank's Gym.
Outside of his family, his greatest joy came from serving his Lord at Memorial Baptist Church where he found many opportunities to serve. What he loved most was teaching men's Bible classes.
Dale is survived by his wife Carol, with whom he shared 53 years of happiness and fun. They are an example of lifelong commitment and devotion as life partners, best friends, and constant companions. In addition to Carol, Dale is survived by his sons, Clay, of Duncan Oklahoma, Scott, wife (Mindy), Blake, wife (Stacy), and Chad, wife (Amy), all from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dale had 6 grandchildren, Sam, Kyle, Luke, Taryn, Dale, and Grace.
Due to early happenings in his life he devoted himself to be the most loving, compassionate, nurturing husband and father. He was loved beyond measure. Dale had a good honorable life. A family, a Church, and friends, he asked for nothing more.
Deep grief is the price you pay for love.
