Don spent 12 years in the Air Force as a high-security cryptographer. He met the love of his life, Mary, while they were both stationed in Hawaii. They were married in Don's home town, Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1955.
Don and Mary eventually decided to give up the Air Force to raise their family. Don became a barber by trade and was the owner of The Fontana Barber Shop in Tulsa for more than 20 years. He was appointed to the Oklahoma State Barber Board by Governor Henry Bellman. During his term, he compiled the testing adopted for apprentice barbers to achieve their Master Barber License.
After 39 years of marriage, Mary passed away. Don retired to pursue other interests. He was a very giving, generous person who enjoyed helping people. As an instructor in the Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service, Don found it particularly rewarding teaching adults to read.
In 2012, he moved to University Village Retirement Community . His compassion and kind, caring attitude was apparent to everyone there. He was an Ambassador to new residents and enjoyed the Drama Club, sang in the Choir and participated in the University Village Olympic games.
He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him.
