Dorcas Marie Merriman, age 96, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2017. Dorcas was born in Atchison, Kansas, on March 15, 1920 to Alice and Carl Volk.
She married her high school sweetheart, the love of her life, Robert Merriman, November 25, 1940. They were blessed with 61 years of marriage. Dorcas was a woman of faith; a kind and gentle spirit who was loved by all who knew her. "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." (Proverbs 31:29)
Her passion in life was her family. She was a devoted mother to daughters, Pamela (Philip) Gettig, of Bedford, Texas and Susan (Robert) Flint of Tulsa. She was adored by her 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Taylor, of Kansas City, MO, and brother, Charles (Pat) Volk, of Overland Park, KS, and their families.
When her husband was transferred to Kansas City, Missouri in 1966, a new chapter began. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Platte Woods, Mo. While living in Atchison she was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Order of the Eastern Star. She traveled to Scotland with her family and celebrated a family reunion at John O'Groats, with all of her many cousins and their families. This became one of her favorite memories. That was when she caught the traveling bug. She and her husband loved traveling the world with friends and family. They loved the opera, theater, and even became great bowlers in their retirement. Theirs was a life well lived.
She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, Mary, and her parents.
