Obituary

Dorothy Joan Schor was born on January 11, 1931 to Henry Schor and Madeline Clark Schor, in Paterson, New Jersey. Now you all know her secret. She never wanted anyone to know her age for fear that she might be considered one of "those" (old) people. She had 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Dot took her final solo flight on October 12, 2014.

Dot was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, artist, philanthropist, pilot and world traveler. She was a champion of stray dogs, people, (especially lost souls) and anyone who would listen to her encouraging words of advice. She only wanted to help. She was passionate about Neighbor for Neighbor. She also volunteered with Hospice, Laureate and Restore Hope Ministries. We are certain that she made a positive impact on so many people's lives. Dot had a genuine interest in helping people from all walks of life, with a hand up or kind advice.

Mom was an artist that strove to create beauty on the canvas and in life, always looking for ways to create, encourage and improve the moment. Whether it be creating a beautiful image on canvas, adjusting the furniture "just so" to make a home more inviting and warm, or taking the time to listen to your problems. She cared and wanted to help you through it. Whatever "it" was, she had practical, heartfelt and direct advice. Of course, she didn't quite understand when someone didn't take that advice.

When Dot was in her 40's, she announced to her family that she was going to become a pilot. Her children already knew she was nuts...what child doesn't know that?! This just confirmed their suspicions. Her goal seemed a bit too ambitious, flat out impossible, and we all knew that this just wasn't going to work out, but, she was undeterred. Well, 5 years later, Mom was flying a Lear Jet. She showed us! Of course, in the mean time, she became "Mom" to every flight student that was away from home going to school. She insisted they not miss out on home cooked meals, and frequently had the house full of flight students for dinner. She didn't want any of them to be homesick. She was not bothered by barriers or obstacles, in fact, she seemed to simply ignore their existence as she steadfastly worked toward whatever goal she had set her sights on. The words "I can't" were not in her vocabulary.

She lived in so many interesting places. Several years were spent in Cairo, Abu Dhabi, and Fintel, Germany. She loved Cairo, got used to Abu Dhabi, but wasn't a fan of Germany. She lived in Florida for a number of years before coming back "home" to Tulsa. She lived most of her adult life in Tulsa and raised her children here. It seemed like the logical move to make. Those who knew Mom know, the world is a better place because she was in it. Mom refused to get old, and she was darn mad when she discovered that she just might finally be one of "those" people.

Dot is survived by her 4 children, Robert Alves (Griselle) of Tulsa, Kathy Stubenhofer (Mike) of Broken Arrow, Kevin Alves of Phoenix, and Steve Alves (Brenda) of Tulsa. Ten Grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her grandson, Eric, her brother, Hank Schor, sister, June Kufta, as well as her parents. We know that this was your best Dawn Patrol Flight ever.
