John Douglas Stahl was born March 10, 1934, in Slaton, Texas, to Linus and Olivia Nesbitt Stahl, and passed away on September 23, 2025.
Doug graduated from San Angelo High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. While in college, he worked summers for Superior Oil Co., Phillips Oil Co., Chemical Process Co., and Amerada Petroleum Co., gaining experience in seismograph operations, oil well fracturing, and as an engineer trainee. During his last two and a half years at the university, he worked at 2-J's Hamburgers, becoming the first UT student to graduate as a 2-J employee.
Doug joined the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in 1960, and in 1983 he initiated a computing group to provide Midcontinent Section SPE members with access to information and the emerging world of personal computers.
He devoted over 32 years to Cities Service Oil Co. / Oxy, beginning as a field production engineer in Olney, Illinois, and El Dorado, Kansas. He later worked in Bartlesville as a Systems Analyst / Programmer, Senior Technical Systems Analyst, and in Tulsa as Production Systems Supervisor, CMS Program Manager, Distributed User Services Manager, Mainframe Software Technical Support Manager, and finally as a Reservoir / Production Engineering Programs Technical Consultant.
After retiring from CSO / Oxy, Doug and his wife Carol took a honeymoon trip during OU-Texas weekend. Soon after, he began working at Tulsa University - Petroleum Abstracts, where he remained for over 29 years.
Doug was active in his community, especially in Scouting. When his sons joined the Boy Scouts in Bartlesville, he became involved alongside them. In 1971, after moving to Tulsa, the family joined Troop 75 at St. Pius X Church. About three years later, Doug became Scoutmaster, serving faithfully in that role for 15 years. In 1973, he also began usher duties at St. Pius X Church, which he continued until 2020.
Doug enjoyed photography and was often the one capturing moments at family gatherings, celebrations, and holidays. After completing a photography program, he also photographed weddings part-time.
He and Carol shared a love of travel, visiting Hawaii, Alaska, New York City, Texas, Louisiana, California, Nevada, Washington, Maryland, and New Jersey, along with cruises to Alaska and around the Hawaiian Islands.
Doug is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carol Stahl; his brother, Van Stahl; six children: Pete Stahl (Sheila), Pam Gallaher (Rob), Phill Stahl, Mark Stahl (Laurie), Kirk Stahl, and Valerie Heick; three stepchildren, who were like his own: Marjorie Evilsizer, Janet Bender (Robby), and Matthew Michaels; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
