Obituary

Elizabeth Kay Newberry, lovingly known as Kay, passed away on October 2, 2026. She was a woman who lived a life full of love and whose greatest joy was her family.

Kay was born on May 20, 1950, to Patricia Hull and George Henson. She grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where she spent her early years. In 1968, she married Larry Newberry, and together they went on to have four children: Deryk Shawn, Patricia Louise, Joshua James, and Lauren Elizabeth. Kay later moved to Broken Arrow and eventually made her home in Tulsa, where she spent her last several years.

Above all else, Kay was a mother and grandmother. She was the best mom and grandma, always putting everyone else first. She loved fiercely, gave selflessly, and was so proud of her children and grandchildren. Her love was the kind that made you feel cared for, welcomed, and always a part of something bigger than yourself.

She could make a mean pot roast, beans, and fried green tomatoes (when able to be found). But her personal favorite was cornbread and buttermilk. These simple, familiar foods were part of the love she shared with those around her, and the memories of gathering with her will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

Her faith was an important part of her life. Kay believed in the Word of God, and her faith was woven into the way she lived and loved others. She lived a life full of love, always giving of herself, and putting the people she loved first.

Kay is survived by her four children, Deryk Shawn, Patricia Louise and her partner Kelly Somacal, Joshua James, and Lauren Elizabeth and her husband, Bret Whitney Jr.; her grandchildren, Maude Payne and her husband, Stuart Payne; Cary Newberry and his wife, Mana, of Dallas; Samuel and Gavin Carrico; Tatum and Avery Newberry; and Bret III "B3", Annalise, and Finn Whitney; and her great-grandchildren, Cooper, Maddox, and Beckham Payne.

She is also survived by her former husband, Larry Newberry, whom she never divorced, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will continue to carry her memory in their hearts.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Patricia Hull and George Henson, and her siblings, Nadine, Roy, Georgia, Phyllis, Jimmy, and George "Jr."

Kay leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and a legacy built on faith, selflessness, and a love that never stopped giving. Though her family will miss her more than words can express, the lessons she taught, the meals she prepared, the memories she created, and the love she gave so freely will remain with them always.

She was deeply loved, she will be deeply missed, and she will never be forgotten.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Citizens Cemetery in Fort Gibson, OK.
