NATIVE OKLAHOMAN DIES AT 105
Ellen L. McAulay (Charon)
died peacefully at her residence on Friday, January 6, 2023. Ellen Louise McAulay (Charon) was born May 26, 1917 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, when the State of Oklahoma was only 10. She was the fourth child of six, born to Francis Anthony Charon and Frances Gertrude Crowe. Ellen was only 12 when her father died in 1929, just as the Great Depression was settling in. She and her older brothers worked hard to care for the family. When Ellen graduated from high school, she worked in retail sales by day and business school by night; learning typing and shorthand. After finishing business school,
Ellen went to work in Okmulgee, then took a job with the State in Oklahoma City. While working for the state, she took the Civil Service exam, was offered a job and moved to Fort Sill, working in the commissary making menus for the soldiers stationed there during WWII.
After the war ended, Ellen moved to Tulsa to live with her family who had relocated from Okmulgee and went to work for J.E. Crosby Oil Company, then moved on to work for Walter Moran, an "independent oil man".
In 1946, Ellen Charon met Walter J. McAulay, who became the love of her life. They were married October 27, 1951 at Christ the King Church. Ellen and Walter became founding members of the Church of St. Mary in Tulsa and settled in to raised 5 lovely children: Maureen (Peter) Mello, Charon Blood, Sheila Mello, Margaret Clark and Jerry McAulay. Then along came grandchildren beginning in 1977. Stephanie, Amanda, Brandon, Jessica, Joe, Audrey, Kayla, Stacy, James, Allison, Tim, Chris, James, Katie, Nicole and Ashlyn. Great grandchildren followed: John, Sophie, Lydia, Bridget, Isaac, Cecilia, Rosa, Sadie, Brooks, Mara, Miles, Hadley, Casey, Maddox, Summer, Ally, Karson, Kamryn, Henry, Charlie, Kaleb, and 2 coming soon.
Ellen is survived by her brother, Jack Charon, and all the children mentioned above. Ellen loved family, her relationship with God, attending Mass, a little bingo, a little poker and a little casino time. She worked, volunteered, traveled, had many friends and lived a long and happy life along the way. We still don't know the secret to a long life, but we are pretty sure she enjoyed hers. We will be forever grateful to call her "mom"; she was a true gem. Services are scheduled as follows: Visitation at 4:00 followed by a Rosary at 5:00 pm on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel 3612 E. 91st St. Catholic Mass on Monday, January 16, 2023 at the Church of St. Mary, 1347 E 49th Pl, 11:00 am. Burial at Calvary Cemetery and reception to follow in the Fitzgerald Family Center.
