Obituary

Dr. Franciscus XP Wanahita passed away peacefully at home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Sunday, May 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born July 27, 1944, in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, to Johannes Paulus Wanahita and Rosa Maria Wanahita, Franciscus was a skilled physician and general surgeon known for his compassion and dedication to helping others. He received his education in Malang, Indonesia, and completed prestigious training, including in Japan. During medical school, he met his wife, Dr. Liana R. Setiawan (an OB/GYN physician), beginning what would become a lifetime love story-they were inseparable.

Franciscus spent much of his life in Jakarta, where he served as a leader of physician groups and demonstrated his unwavering commitment to patients by providing care to all in need, including during times of civil unrest. His medical career was an inspiration to his children, who sought to follow in his footsteps as physicians. Later, he relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he lived for more than a decade with his family.

Education, medicine, and family were the cornerstones of Franciscus's life. His generous spirit touched countless lives, and he consistently prioritized the wellbeing of his family, patients, and community. Growing up as an altar boy in the Catholic Church, Franciscus maintained his faith throughout his life and regularly volunteered his expertise at a free clinic at his church.

A hardworking, social man with diverse interests, Franciscus enjoyed watching Oklahoma City Thunder basketball, following soccer (particularly Manchester United and the Netherlands National Team), and was a car enthusiast.

Franciscus is survived by his wife, Dr. Liana R. Setiawan; Franciscus's daughter, Dr. Anna Wanahita, a stroke neurologist based in Tulsa, her son, Andrew Xavier Surja (15), and his father, Dr. Anton Surja, a psychiatrist based in Tulsa; Franciscus's son, Dr. Nikolas Wanahita, an interventional cardiologist based in Singapore, his wife, Alice Wanahita, and their children, Kayla Isabelle Wanahita (21) and Ella Michelle Wanahita (18); and Franciscus's sister, Maria Theresa Wanahita, and her husband, Budi Pringgosusanto.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church (1347 E 49th Pl, Tulsa, OK 74105), where he was a faithful member. The funeral service will be livestreamed at the following link. < https://www.youtube.com/@ChurchofSaintMary >
