Obituary

George Arthur Douglas, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at Saint Francis Hospital. George was born on November 18, 1932, in Edmond, Oklahoma to parents Arthur and Estelle Douglas. He graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa in 1950. George is preceded in death by his father, Arthur, in 1968, his mother, Estelle, in 2005 and his son, Brian Douglas in 2023. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene, and his brother, Melvin Douglas, also survived by his sons, Dan, and Alan (Susie) Douglas. George is also survived by his grandchildren: Catherine, Elizabeth (Michael), Matthew (Madison), Rebecca (Makenzie), Gregory, Michael, and Katie. Great-grandchildren: Amethyst, Fae, and Csilla.

After graduating high school, George worked at Braden Winch Company in Broken Arrow. In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served overseas during the Korean War. He received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the China Service Medal. At the end of his service to his country, he returned home to Oklahoma where he soon met the love of his life, Irene Patak. They were married on October 11, 1958. George and Irene settled in Tulsa and raised three boys. George received a degree from the Oklahoma School of Accountancy and began work at F&M Bank, where he would work for the next 40 years. George started his career in banking as a Teller and worked his way up to Vice President. He retired from F&M Bank in 1994. George converted to Catholicism and was baptized at the Church of St. Pius X on April 20, 1967.

When he wasn't working at the bank, coaching, or attending little league baseball and basketball games at St. Pius school, or Special Olympic events with Brian, George loved working outdoors. Either in the garage or the yard, it didn't matter. He loved home projects and hard work. He was the true example of, "you don't stop because you're tired, you stop because you're done".

During the 30 years of his retirement, George and Irene stayed busy caring for their son Brian, and volunteering for several organizations, specifically the Food Pantry at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Bixby. They committed to donating their time, talent, and treasure to help others in need. George and Irene loved attending Mass. They also enjoyed going out to dinner and dancing at the Candlewood Club and the Petroleum Club where they were long time members. They continued to enjoy dining and dancing until Covid closed some of their favorite places. George and Irene loved decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas, and they were the happiest when the entire family was together.
