Dr. Gordon Dennis Lantz died at home Monday of complications from cancer. He was 67 years old. Born October 31, 1943 in El Paso, Texas to Harry and Doris Lantz, Gordon grew up in Houston where he developed a love for music, particularly the cello. He earned an undergraduate degree in history from Harvard College in 1965 and spent the rest of that decade pursuing interests including music and travel. After medical studies at Texas Tech University (1975), he completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine, where he met and married Linda Goldenstern.
For 30 years, Gordon practiced internal medicine and endocrinology in Tulsa, first in private practice with his wife, and later with Omni Medical Group. He maintained a close relationship with St. John Medical Center where he served as Chief of Staff from 1993-1995.
In Tulsa, he remained active in music; although he didn't play as often as he'd have liked, he devoted time and energy to Chamber Music Tulsa and The Tulsa Philharmonic and loved attending performances of all kinds. For the past 15 years he spent free weekends on the golf course, where 36 holes were never enough. He liked wind in his hair and had lately traded his convertible for motorcycles (he always wore a helmet).
Gordon was a man of ideas. He read almost everything and spent a lot of time thinking about the world. When he delivered those thoughts, they were quiet but profound, and usually based in fact. He loved quotations and jokes, considered puns an art form, and was goofier than most people know.
He is survived by his gremlin-dog Cosmo, his brother Ronald who lives Gordon's musical dream, his brother Leonard who gives voice to opinions Gordon may have thought but not said, his son Justin who hopes to be half the doctor his dad was, his daughter Meredith whom he taught never to wait to enjoy life, and his wife Linda who learned to like him as much as she loved him.
Friends can honor his memory with contributions to the St. John Medical Center Foundation or Chamber Music Tulsa.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 5, at Fitzgerald SOUTHWOOD COLONIAL CHAPEL, 3612 E. 91st St. Rabbi Marc Fitzerman will officiate.
