Obituary

Today we are celebrating a man of God who impacted many people's lives and won hundreds of souls for Jesus. Harlan Barnes was born April 12th 1961 to Yvonne Boyers and Walter Barnes in Washington, D.C. Harlan had three sisters, Zondra Blackmon, Darlene Jackson and Levette Hale. He grew up in Pulaski, Virginia.  At 16, he received his GED to join the US Army. After serving three years in the military, Harlan gave his life to Christ. Once leaving the Army, He became an Evangelist and Minister of the Gospel after attending Rhema Bible Training College, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Harlan was so passionate about ministering to people about the love of Jesus with every opportunity that arose, in fact, within days of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11, he was on the scene distributing tracks he had written, sharing the gospel right in the mist of all the destruction at ground zero.

Harlan loved jazz music, which he inherited from his father, Walter Barnes who was a professional percussionist. Harlan played multiple instruments, but the keyboard was his most favorite. He passed his love for music down to all his children. He and all his children are gifted with beautiful voices and have performed together on many occasions. Harlan produced and performed vocal and instruments on several albums.

Harlan had one son from a previous marriage, Joshua Crawford. On July 7, 1994, Harlan married his wife, Joyce. Over the next 12 years they had four daughters and one son. Shuntel, Unique, (deceased,) Destiny, Jasmine and Daniel. While members at Rhema Bible Church, all their children were dedicated to the Lord, Jesus Christ. For the last five years, the Barnes Family have been members of Victory Christian Center.  Harlan loved his family passionately. He taught them to be true Christians through serving the body of Christ and loving one another with a humble heart. He leaves behind a host of family and many loving friends.
