Homer Nusbaum Flora Jr., D.O., age 90, formerly of Mission, Texas and Nowata, OK, died peacefully on December 4, 2017, in the home of his daughter, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Homer was born on December 23, 1926 in Nowata, Oklahoma to Ruth and Homer N. Flora Sr., D.O. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1944 and volunteered into the U.S. Navy where he served during World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1947.
After the Navy, Homer pursued his premedical studies at Ottawa University and the University of Kansas City. During this time, he married Katharine Porter of Ottawa, Kansas, on March 9, 1948. He graduated with his Osteopathic Degree from what is now known as the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1953. After serving one year rotating internship at Lakeside Hospital in Kansas City, Homer located his Family Practice in Nowata, Oklahoma. In 1971 Homer quit family practice and accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration as Assistant Regional FlightSurgeon moving to Fort Worth, Texas. During his tenure, Homer graduated from the U.S. Air Force Flight Surgeon School at Brooks Air Force Base. In 1972 Homer returned to Family Practice in Nowata and continued until he retired in 1993. After retirement, Homer did Locum Tenens at various locations in Northeastern Oklahoma. Most often Homer worked at the Cherokee Nation Health Clinic at Nowata. He last worked as a Locum Physician in 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kay in 2005, and his sister, Betty Hjorth. He is survived by his four daughters: Phyllis (Jerry) Hill, Maggie Stroud (Dan), Carissa (Floyd) Vandagriff, Janice (Steve) Riff; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will celebrate Homer's life 2 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel in Tulsa, Oklahoma.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John Hospice Care, 4720 S.
