Obituary

Ira M. Rothman, beloved husband, father, zayde, and friend, died on Saturday, March 30 due to complications from a heart attack he suffered in 2017. He was 72.

Ira was born on June 25, 1946 in Bronx, New York, to Marcus and Sylvia Rothman. He spent his elementary school years in Biloxi, Mississippi before moving back to Bayshore, Long Island with his family as a teenager.

After attending college at Hofstra University he enlisted in the Air Force and served a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. A few years after returning from his tour of duty he met the love of his life, Mary Hastings, while on maneuvers at Little Rock Air Force Base.  They lost touch for a number of years but eventually reconnected and married in 1977 in Kansas City, Missouri.  Shortly after the birth of their first son, the young family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Ira began his career at American Airlines as a programmer.  Ira and Mary made their home in Tulsa, raised their three children, and had many happy years together there.  Ira retired from American in 1999 after a 22-year career.  Never one to sit still, Ira subsequently ran IT services for several local businesses, including Palmer Continuum of Care and Ability Resources, from which he retired at the end of 2018.

Ira loved the Jewish community in Tulsa and viewed many of its members as family. He was a 38-year member of Temple Israel, where he volunteered, taught, and served in various roles including as a Board member, president of the Brotherhood, Chair of the Board's IT Committee,  Sunday school and Midrasha teacher, among other roles.  A lifelong learner, he especially valued the opportunity to teach and help influence the Jewish identity of Sunday school and Midrasha students of all ages. He also participated for many years in the interfaith Trialogue program coordinated by the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice.

Ira is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary, and his children, Moshe (Laura), Andrew (Melissa), and Sarah (John). He was the proud zayde of Eliana, Jaden, Colin, Liam, Gauge, Adilynn, and Isaac, brother to Esther, uncle to Tamara and Kerry, and grand uncle to Tori and Cody.
