James P. Miller passed away on July 4, 2024 at the age of 95. The family will receive friends at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel on Friday, July 12 from 9:00 - 10:00 AM and a memorial service will be held at the Montereau Retirement Community Chapel in Tulsa on Saturday July 13 at 1:00 PM following a private committal service at Calvary Cemetery. Jim was born on May 12, 1929 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to James and Miriam Miller. He grew up in Conchas Dam, New Mexico, Las Animas Colorado and Little Rock, Arkansas where he attended Catholic High School. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Jim met Patricia Hippert in Roanoke, Virginia while attending V.M.I. in Lexington, Virginia. It was love at first sight and she was the love of his life. He entered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant in September, 1952 and was stationed in Ft Belvoir, Virginia. Jim and Pat were married on January 16, 1953 in Little Rock, Arkansas while he was stationed in Camp Polk, Louisiana. He was later assigned to the USAREUR Command in Karlsruhe, Germany where they were stationed before being discharged from active duty in 1954. He served in the Army Reserves until 1961 attaining the rank of Captain.
Jim was then employed by Williams, Coile and Blanchard Architects and Engineers in Newport News, Virginia. He joined Cities Service Oil Company later to become CITGO Petroleum Corp in Baltimore, Maryland in 1955. Jim held the positions of Field Engineer in Baltimore, Maryland, Division Engineer in Richmond, Virginia, Superintendent of Operations in Arlington, Virginia, Regional Engineer and Assistant Operations Manager in Baltimore, Maryland, Coordinator of Construction in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Operations Manager, Southern Marketing Region in Atlanta, Georgia, Terminal Facilities Manager and Manager of Engineering and Technical Services in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He retired from CITGO Petroleum Corp in 1993 from the position of General Manager of Terminal Operations and Facilities after 38 years with the company.
Pat and Jim had been member of Asbury United Methodist Church since 1973. Jim was a Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers. Jim was a sports fan and his interests and hobbies were reading and studying Civil War and World War II history and putting together photo albums/scrapbooks of their travels, their family and assembling family genealogy.
Jim was an outstanding father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his family deeply and was very active in attending events related to his grandchildren as they were growing up. He was a strong believer in Jesus Christ and read his Bible daily with great discipline and passion. He had a lengthy prayer list that he meticulously went through nightly. He was unfailingly polite, respectful, and pleasant to everyone he encountered right up until the end of his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother Miriam Miller, father James Purdy Miller and his wife Pat Miller of 65 years. He is survived by a son James Miller Jr. and his wife Belinda of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma two grandsons Michael "Mick" Miller his wife Jessie and great-grandson Oliver of Carrollton, Texas, Matthew Miller and his wife Madison of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, son Stephen Miller and his wife Jennifer of Norman, Oklahoma, grandson Jared Miller his wife Haley and great-granddaughter Annie of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, granddaughter Jessica Whitlock her husband Landon and great-granddaughter Ireland and great-grandson Ralph of Columbia, Tennessee.
The family would like to thank all those at Montereau who contributed so much to James' quality of life. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimers Association.
