James "Hal" Neal Jr. M.D., died at the age of 93. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1937 and from the Oklahoma School of Medicine in December 1943. As a physician, he invaded Iwo Jima on D+1 associated with the 31st Seabees and the 5th Marine Division. After the war he specialized in general surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Lancaster, PA for four years and then spent two years in a preceptorship at the Veterans Hospital in Mountain Home Tennessee. In 1952 he became a member of the American Board of General Surgeons, then returned to Tulsa to start private practice. At Hillcrest Medical Center he helped initiate the surgical teaching program and started the Tulsa Burn Unit. He served as Chief of Surgery and Chairman of the Surgical Quality Care Committee. He went on a teaching tour with his wife and a group of doctors through China and later with the same group through Africa. Dr. Neal spoke on the treatment of burns. In 1949 he married his wife, Mary Alice a registered nurse, of 64+ years. They have nine children; Barbie, Mia, Jim, Patrick, Tom, Martie, Lisa, Katie and Mike. Eighteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. They have been a member of Cedar Ridge Country Club since 1967. He was an active member of St. Bernard's and St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Dr. Neal was preceded in death by; his parents, James H. Neal, M.D. and Cecilia Metzger Neal, two sisters, Dorothy C. Neal and Mary Margaret Neal. He has one living sister, Edith Canfield of Tulsa.
