James Richard "Jim"
Sullivan
Sep 21, 1944 — Sep 29, 2026
James "Jim" Richard Sullivan, 82, passed away on September 29, 2026, at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK, after a prolonged illness due to complications from cancer. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Jim lived a life defined by quiet sacrifice, putting the needs of those he loved above his own at every turn.
Born in Pawhuska, OK, on September 21, 1944, to Dr. Robert H. and Marie B. Sullivan, he was the second of nine children. Jim grew up in Pawhuska, El Paso, TX, Bremerhaven, Germany, and California as his father served in the US Army Medical Corps. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from UC Santa Cruz and later an MBA from the University of Tulsa, during which time he worked at Saint Francis Hospital and helped care for his younger siblings. In 1974, Jim began a 34-year career as an economist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 2008.
On October 10, 1977, Jim married Mary Ellen Winkert, a nurse he met through Saint Francis. Together for 48 years, they raised three children in a home filled with love, youth sports coaching, and scratch-made "Sullivan pizzas." In retirement, "Papa" delighted in making homemade buttermilk pancakes for his seven grandchildren. Jim's primary focus in life was always providing for and supporting his family. He sacrificed personal comforts to ensure his children received a Catholic education.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; daughter Mary Cathryn (Mark) Meredith and children Olivia, Hannah, and Luke; son Chris (Laura) Sullivan and children Layla and Owen; son Timothy (Cassidy) Sullivan and children Margot and Nora; siblings Dan (Betty Anne), Bill (Sarah), Susan Wolfram, John (Margie), Charles (Karen), George (Francois), Carolyn (Ronald) Suydam, and Margaret (Todd) Golla; cousin Jean (Dean) Robertson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Funeral Mass will be held October 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Benedict Church, 2200 W. Ithaca St., Broken Arrow, OK. The family thanks Dr. Carla Kurkjian, the staff at Mercy Coletta Cancer Center, and the Saint Francis PICU caregivers.
