Janice A. Fonkalsrud, Tulsa, age 90 died at Clarehouse, a Hospice Home, on August 15, 2025. Jan was born to Jay and Beulah Adriance in Sabetha, KS, on January 5, 1935. She was a graduate of Seneca, KS, High School and The University of Kansas. She earned a M.A. in Speech Correction in 1959. The American Speech and Hearing Association awarded her the Basic Clinical Certificate in Speech in 1960, and Speech Pathology in 1968. Jan received her Oklahoma State License to practice as Speech Pathologist in 1976. She worked in Tulsa for Children's Medical Center where she met a lifelong friend that introduced her to her husband. Janice then worked with Head Start in surrounding communities and later for the University of Tulsa. In 1991, she was honored as Professor of the Year in the College of Nursing and Applied Health Sciences. The Oklahoma Speech-Language-Hearing Association honored Janice for Exceptional Dedication and Leadership in the Field of Communication Disorders in 2001. Jan was the Clinical Coordinator when she retired from the University of Tulsa in 2001. After having their retirement home built, Jan co-founded Able Talk, providing speech and language services, in 2002. Her dedication to helping people kept her working until she retired for a second time at 80 years old.
Throughout her life Jan had an appreciation for music. She played clarinet at KU and piano at home when her sons were young. Jan attended the OK Mozart Festival and Signature Symphony at TCC for many years. She also enjoyed listening to her collection of classical and jazz CD's. Jan loved to travel taking multiple trips to Europe and the mountains of Colorado among many other destinations. Jan's appreciation for the finer things extended to her delight in watching KU basketball and playing Bridge or Bunco with her friends. Jan always loved and supported her family. She hosted Sunday family meals for decades cooking most of them until reaching her late 80's.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Owen. She is survived by her son, Andrew Fonkalsrud of Decatur, IL; son, Philip Fonkalsrud and his wife, Kelly Clark of Tulsa; son, David Fonkalsrud, his wife Lisa, and their son, Erik, also of Tulsa. A private service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Tulsa, OK. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you host a Sunday family dinner or donate to
