Miriam Jean Garfinkel Sanditen, 89, of Tulsa, OK, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2018.
Jean was born in Memphis, TN on July 20, 1929 to Harry and Bertha Garfinkel, and grew up in Boyle, MS. She attended Boyle High School, and was a member of the pep club and band, playing clarinet and accompanying the football team at every game as drum majorette. She attended the University of Oklahoma, where she met her lifelong love, Wilfred Sanditen, to whom she was married for 69 years.
Jean is survived by her husband, Wilfred Sanditen, her son Harold Sanditen (Thanasis Kalantzis), her grandchildren Brad Sanditen (Adria) and Leslie Sanditen (Frank Zigmond), and her four great grandchildren Will, Sam and Phifer Sanditen, and Scott Zigmond, as well as several nieces and nephews, and her devoted dog, Paco. She was predeceased by her son, Scott, her brother Bernard Garfinkel and sister Leona Gordon.
Jean was a mother and housewife, who will always be remembered for her smile and contagious laughter which lit up a room when she entered. Jean was active in the Tulsa community as a volunteer, and a tireless advocate for Tulsa's many Jewish organizations. In 2006, along with her husband, Wilfred, Jean was honored by the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art at their 40th anniversary gala, for her extraordinary commitment to the Jewish community and her dedicated generosity and leadership toward the museum. Throughout her life, Jean was an active member of Temple Israel, Congregations B'nai Emunah and the greater Tulsa Jewish community.
Instead of flowers Jean may be honored with contributions to the Scott Sanditen Memorial Community Service Fund at Congregation B'nai Emunah, Tulsa, or The Tulsa Day Care Center for the Homeless.
A graveside funeral will be held on Friday, August 31st at 10:00am at Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetary.
