Joanne graduated from Marquette High School in 1947. In 1949 she married the love of her life Jim Ziegler. They shared their life together for over 73 years and oversaw their ever-expanding family.
Joanne enjoyed camping and picnicking on weekends with her "boys" and husband Jim. Later in life she wanted a more permanent vacation place with a flush toilet and a shower. So, Jim and the "boys" worked for several years to build the "Hulburt Hilton" on Ft. Gibson Lake. At the "Hulbert Hilton" Joanne entertained many guests and family members over the years. According to Joanne anytime you had two or more people together it was a party.
Joanne had many interests. She was an excellent seamstress, quilter, decorator, fashionista, cook, all-round crafts person, and orchestrator of many parties and family gatherings. At Christmas time and other occasions, she made quilts for her new grandchildren. She embroidered numerous frameable pictures and pillows for her daughters-in-law. Joanne's other great interest was playing bridge. She played in the same "group" for 50+ years once a month. As Joanne said, those were smoky events back in the "50's" but became very healthy in the latter part of the 20th century. Joanne played well into her 90's. She liked all card games and wasn't above cheating a little now and then, just to liven things up. Joanne was skilled in the culinary arts, except for potatoes au 'gratin. She could never get the "hang of" potatoes au' gratin, which her "boys" called behind her back "potatoes o'rotten." JoAnne was charming and, despite being way outnumbered by her men, usually got her way.
Joanne and her husband Jim received a special gift from God in their son Thomas Paul who was afflicted from birth with muscular dystrophy. They had Tom for 27 blessed years. Joanne worked with others to help start the Tulsa Recreational Center for the Physically Limited (TRCPL), now known as the Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges. Joanne helped Tom with joining the Boy Scout troop at the TRCPL. Joanne also spent numerous hours volunteering with the TRCPL annual Pancake Breakfast.
