Obituary

Joan (Dishman) Lyons, age 93, passed away on July 14, 2022, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she had been residing. The eldest child of Ralph and Amelia (Oetting) Dishman, she was born on July 18, 1928, in Mansfield, Missouri. Her family moved to Springfield, Missouri, where Joan graduated from Springfield High School at age 16. She continued her education at Drury College, graduating summa cum laude with a double major in mathematics and chemistry. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority.

Joan was united in marriage to Francis "Frank" D. Lyons on August 5, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield, Missouri. After living in several Missouri towns, she and her family moved to Oklahoma City. Joan quickly got involved in community organizations. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Her volunteer work included PTA, Campfire Girls, Boy Scouts, American Red Cross, and numerous hospitals and nursing homes in the OKC area. Her passion soon became the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, serving as a docent there for over 30 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, crafting, and genealogy. She had also played viola with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra during her high school and college years.

Joan moved back to Springfield, Missouri, following her husband's death in 2009 and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In 2014, Joan moved to Tulsa to be near her daughter and son-in-law where she resided until her death.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; and one sister, Geraldine (Dishman) Thacker. She is survived by her son, Dr. Daniel Lyons, and his wife Barbie (Springfield, Missouri); and daughter, Susan Lyons, and her husband, Tom Ackley (Tulsa, Oklahoma). She is also survived by her three grandsons, Matt Lyons (Amy), Randy Lyons (Lisa), and Jeff Lyons (Stacy Jordan), several greatgrandchildren, and numerous extended family members.

A private graveside service was held on July 21, 2022, at Rivermonte Memorial Gardens in Springfield, Missouri. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1415 S. Holland, Springfield, MO 65807 or the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, 1700 NE 63rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73111.
