JOHNSON, John Byers (Jack), 87, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, July 10, 2010 in Tulsa, OK. He was born September 3, 1922 in Indianapolis, IN to John and Mabel Johnson. He served in active duty in Europe during WWII and remained in the active reserve until retirement as a Lieut. Col. in USAF. He married Ruth Elaine Beattie on July 26, 1948. He was a life long member of Kiwanis receiving the George F. Hixson Fellow medal for 50 years perfect attendance and service. He also gave nearly 20 gallons of blood to American Red Cross blood banks. He was an active member of a local church in every community in which he lived often serving as a teacher, deacon, elder, and board member.
Jack was a retired Physical Director for Southwest Area YMCAs in Houston, Dallas, Downtown Tulsa, Amarillo, Thornton Y Tulsa, Lubbock, Hereford, and Bixby. The Daily Family YMCA of Bixby honored his volunteer service by naming their fitness center after him. As HPE Dept. Chairman at ORU for seven years, he instituted aerobics as required for all students.
He is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, younger brother, and first grandson. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; daughter, Karen J. Anderson (Bruce), Grand Prairie, TX; son, Erik Alan Johnson, Tulsa, OK; grandchildren, Benjamin James and Bethany Joanna Anderson; sister-in-law, Mary Helen Johnson; brother-in-laws, John Beattie (Penny) and Gene Hazlett; nieces, nephews and numerous people he mentored.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church (sanctuary) with a 62nd wedding anniversary reception following (fellowship hall) at 2 PM.
