Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. John Albert Coates announces his passing on Thursday, February 21st, 2019, at the age of 93.
John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Mary Emma Dailey Coates, and his children, John Arthur Coates, Christopher Thomas Coates, Patrick Edward Coates (Margaret), Stephen Michael Coates and Anne Elizabeth Coates Hall (Richard) and his grandchildren, Chase Austin Coates (Sarah), Benjamin John Coates, John Hayden Coates "Jack" and Penelope Anne Coates "Nelle". He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Grace Coates of Geary, Oklahoma and his sister, Mildred Renfro Owings.
John graduated from Oklahoma A&M in 1950 and the University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1955. Later that year, while working as an intern at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, John met the love of his life Mary Emma Dailey, whom he married on October 20, 1956. In 1961, John began practicing neurological surgery at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, until his retirement in 1999.
John had an amazing sense of humor, quick wit, and enjoyed the art of storytelling. He was an avid reader and an inspirational lifelong learner. He loved people and had a heart for service. He was passionate about his career and continued to study the brain throughout his retirement, sharing his knowledge with others. He was an avid car enthusiast. He loved music and was an accomplished trumpet player, playing first chair in the 7th Fleet Band during WWII.
He was tremendously loved and admired by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
The Visitation will be Monday, February 25, 5–7pm at Fitzgerald Southwood, 3612 East 91st Street, Tulsa.
The Celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, February 26, at 10am at Christ The King, 1520 South Rockford Avenue, Tulsa.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to one of the following: Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, 825 NE 13th Street, OKC, OK 73104; The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.
