Obituary
John Edward Dillon was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 21st 1933 to Stephen V. and Florence Detzel Dillon. He passed away Wednesday, May 30th. He grew up in Tulsa, attending Marquette School for his elementary grades and graduating from Marquette High School in 1952. He went onto attend Creighton University and the University of Oklahoma, taking a break from his studies to work for Mid-Continent Pipeline. He was drafted in 1956 and upon completing his enlistment returned to school, completing his degree at Benedictine Heights.
Upon receiving his Bachelor of Arts in American History in 1961, he accepted a teaching position at the new Bishop Kelley High School. He returned to the University of Oklahoma over successive summers to complete his Masters in American History in 1968 and became a lifetime fan of both the Oklahoma Sooners and American History in the process.
He was one of a lucky few who turn their passions into a lifetime career. His love of history, sports and Catholic education led to a career as a history teacher and football coach in Tulsa, Omaha, Nebraska, and twenty-two years at Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, KS. During his tenure as department head, teacher and coach he was a positive role model and influence on countless young men and women. In 1996 he retired to Mannford, Oklahoma with his wife of 39 years, Velma Merle Robinson Dillon.
John Dillon is preceeded in death by his parents, his wife Velma, brother Stephen Dillon and sister, Carolyn Dillon Seaman. He is survived by his brother Joseph and sister-in-law Carole Dillon, his nieces, Melanie Seaman and Stephani Franklin, nephew David Dillon, and great nieces Brooklyn and Molly Dillon and Taylor Franklin.
Visitation will be Noon – 5:00 p.m., Monday, June 4th at Fitzgerald Ivy Chapel. Services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church. A Rosary will be said at 7:00 pm Monday, June 4th with a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 am Tuesday, June 5th.
