John George Ghostbear, 80, died at home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on December 28, 2023, following several years of health complications. He was born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, on February 16, 1943, to Gladys and Ted Ghostbear. His parents, sister Cherrie Dean, nephew Matthew McBride, cousins Merlin Griffin, Rena McCreary, Bobbie Burlingame, and Johnny "Zero" Griffin's deaths preceded John's.
Following graduation from Hale High School, John earned his bachelor's degree in history and political science and his Juris Doctorate from The University of Tulsa. Sworn into the Oklahoma Bar Association on April Fool's Day, 1969, John began a long career as an attorney. His love of the law and specialization in Federal Indian Law led to many legal triumphs and lifelong relationships.
Survivors include his wife, Anne, and their children Ted Ghostbear, Jenny McElroy, and Amy Beaudoin, along with sons-in-law Lincoln McElroy and Christopher Beaudoin. John is also survived by his sister, Tedine Thurman, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Ashby and Tim DeMoss. John cherished and adored their four grandchildren: Bennett McElroy, Carver Beaudoin, Caroline McElroy, and William Beaudoin. John also leaves close cousins Ahniwake Mills, Jody Dysinger, and Randa Scott, along with many second cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family, and a host of friends.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Epiphany, Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 4818 E. 9th Street, Tulsa, OK 74112. People may celebrate John's life and honor him by donating to St. Luke's.
