He was born in Tulsa in 1925 to Frederick and Dorothea Kerr. John attended Will Rogers High School before studying engineering at the University of Tulsa where he was Treasurer of Lambda Chi Alpha, in Phi Gamma Kappa, the Engineers Club, Community Council, Inter-Fraternity Council and in Who's Who of American College Students 1947. John also loved travelling by car all around the country. Two of his favorite places to visit were Alaska and Colorado where he and Ione loved fishing. In addition, one of the things nearest and dearest to John was his faith in the Lord.
