John Hobbie McCoy was born to Lula Mae and John Porter McCoy on March 3, 1939 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He went to be with Jesus on November 21, 2016.
John was the picture of health for many years. He had much energy and enthusiasm for life and fun activities. He enjoyed going out to eat and going to church events. He enjoyed taking his dog to the park and to the Riverwalk in Jenks. He worked up until his health started failing. He enjoyed every moment of his career at Walmart. Most recently he worked as a greeter. The position fit him well. He was a people person and could converse with anyone and everyone. He loved to be around those he loved, his family and friends. He found his work fulfilling and stopped working in the spring of 2016.
John was a very hard worker with a strong work ethic. He was proud of each business he worked for over his 77 years. You could say he was a walking advertisement, as he would always encourage others to visit him at his sales location and he'd make them a really good deal. In his early years he worked on pipelines in western Oklahoma. He spent many years in retail sales. He sold Jewelry at Zale's Jewelry, cars at various Chevrolet and Dodge dealerships as well as held various management positions in his work career. In his later years, he worked at Walmart in the deli where he lovingly referred to himself as the "Chicken Man." Then he worked for Walmart in the capacity of greeter before he retired. He also had the privilege of being the store Santa.
He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and he also attended Victory Christian Center where he served as a greeter to church goers. One of the high lights of his week was attending Bible Study with his good friend Margie. John umpired and refereed for many games in the Sapulpa and Jenks School districts. He had a passion for all kinds of sports, but he particularly loved golf and football. He could still out drive a young man at the driving range on Father's Day of this past year, even as his health was failing.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Margaret McCoy. She went to be with the Lord in March of 2007; his parents, Lou and John McCoy, also preceded John in glory. John was an only child. He leaves behind his two children and their spouses: Janet and Duane Phillips of Jenks and Scott and Shelly McCoy of Glenpool and honorary daughter Tracy Brackett of Jenks. He was known as "Poppy John" to his grandchildren: Ashlea and Ben Edwards of Tulsa, Seth Phillips of Jenks, and Ashlynn McCoy of Jenks; step-grandchildren, Hannah and James Kennedy and one great grandchild, Margaret Edwards of Tulsa. All of them will miss him greatly but are so thankful that he is at peace and with his Savior in Heaven.
Visitation will be at Fitzgerald Colonial Chapel Tuesday November 22nd from 6pm to 8pm. Services will be at St. James UMC, 5050 East 111th Street South Tulsa at 10:30am Wednesday November 23rd.
