Obituary

John (Jack) Wallace Shearing, 81, passed away on June 18, 2018, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with his family by his side.

John was born on March 31, 1937, in Toronto, Canada, to John and Edith (Bowman) Shearing, who emigrated from England. He had one younger brother, Donald. John married Beverley Broneldia Herrington in 1956. They raised two daughters, Lisa-Gaye and Lorraine. In 1984, the couple moved to Tulsa.

John was dedicated to his family. In later years, he was a devoted caregiver for Beverley. John and Beverley celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2017. They cherished their pets, including rescue dog Marley. John had presence–everyone remarked on his deep "broadcaster" voice, which, along with his height and humor, made an impression on people. He gained friends wherever he went.

John served in the Royal Canadian Navy and enjoyed traveling by sea to Japan. He was a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). During the last 20 years of his career, John worked for Hilti Inc., in Toronto and Tulsa, retiring as Chief Financial Officer for Hilti Western Hemisphere. He served on the boards of the local YMCA, Goodwill Industries of Tulsa, and Delta Dental of Oklahoma, acting as chairman of the board for a time at the latter two. John was an active member of Financial Executives Institute (FEI).

John excelled at almost anything he put his mind to: he was a skilled home repairman and an excellent electrician. When he was younger, John played the trombone and snowmobiled, and, in middle age, he began waterskiing.

He and Beverley adored their cabin and boating on Grand Lake as well as travel. John delighted in his cars and loved to read and play card games. He was quick-witted and relished a good joke. After retiring, he spent many happy hours on the golf course.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Beverley, and his parents. He is survived by daughters, Lisa-Gaye (Michael) Mead of Joplin, Missouri, and Lorraine (Robert) Peters of Chicago, Illinois, and grandchildren, Spencer and Julianne Mead of Joplin. He is also survived by brother Donald (Mary) Shearing, of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, and nephews, Bradley (Kristy) Shearing and Kyle (Diana Emond) Shearing, and great-niece, Corinne, all of Ontario, Canada.

We will remember John for his love, humor, charisma, and intelligence.
