Joseph Robert Vazzo passed away at home surrounded by his family Tuesday, August 17, 2021. He was born to Dominic and Mary Vazzo in Youngstown, Ohio. He joined the United States Army Air Force after graduation and completed air traffic control school at Chanute Air Force Base prior to deployment on the Queen Mary in 1944. He served with the 80th Carrier Squadron in Membury Farms England as featured in The Green Light, an historical account of allied airborne forces in World War II. He also served in France and Germany. He graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics School of Meteorology and was employed by the National Weather Service for 35 years in Cleveland, Winston-Salem, Pittsburgh and Youngstown prior to retirement in 1985. He founded the Youngstown Right to Life Society, served as legislative aide and president of local chapter 2184 of NARFE in Tulsa for several years, and was a 20-year member of Tulsa SERRA club. He leaves behind the love of his life of 70 years, Martha (Gebetsberger), 5 children, Joseph, James, Maryann (Leslie), Laura (McDevitt) and Robert, 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 19th with a Prayer Service to follow at 7:00 PM, both at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, on Friday, August 20th, at Church of the Resurrection.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bishop Kelly High School in Tulsa.
