Leroy M. Milton, M.D., a dedicated physician and community leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. Born in 1935, he grew up near Shawnee, Oklahoma. Leroy married his beloved wife, Kathryn, on December 24, 1957. Together, they raised four children: Susan; John; James (Robin); and Mark (Nicole). He was also a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: James and Robin's children, Austin, Lauren, and Alex; Mark's daughters, Emily and Alice; and Mark and Nicole's son, Sam.
Leroy graduated from Bethel High School in 1952, where he was a proud member of the F.F.A. and received the "Junior Master Farmer" award. He continued his education at Oklahoma State University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1956. He then pursued his passion for medicine, graduating from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in 1959. Dr. Milton completed his Internal Medicine internship at the O.U. Health Science Center and his residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.
He served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps from 1963 to 1965. After his service, Dr. Milton began a long and distinguished career in private practice in McAlester, Oklahoma, where he devoted himself to the well-being of his patients for over 60 years. His practice began at the McAlester Clinic, which later merged with the Warren Clinic.
Throughout his career, Dr. Milton held numerous leadership roles. He served five terms as president of the Pittsburgh County Medical Society and was instrumental in the development of McAlester Regional Hospital, where he served as chairman of various committees and the hospital board for many years. He also served as Chief of Staff at McAlester Regional Hospital for a number of years. His contributions to the medical community included directing the McAlester Regional Dialysis Unit and Rehabilitation Unit.
In addition to his medical contributions, Dr. Milton served on the Oklahoma Council on Judicial Complaints, further demonstrating his commitment to public service.
Dr. Milton had a passion for landscape and nature photography, reading pre-World War II European history, restoring classic jeeps, and collecting classical music and jazz recordings. He also spent twenty years raising beef cattle, further showcasing his diverse interests and talents.
Leroy M. Milton's legacy of compassion, dedication, and service will be remembered by his family, colleagues, and the countless patients whose lives he touched. He leaves behind a lasting impact on the McAlester community and the field of medicine. He will be deeply missed.
