The world lost a great man, Lonnie Sowell, on Saturday, October 11, 2014, but the heavens gained an angel. Lonnie lost his life suddenly and unexpectedly from leukemia.
Lonnie was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on October 30, 1939, and lived in West Tulsa his entire life. He graduated from Daniel Webster High School in 1958 and married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Gomez, October 10, 1959. Lonnie and Phyllis were blessed with three children: Mark, Valerie, and Andrea. He worked in the automotive upholstery industry for a number of years and eventually worked at Sun Oil Refinery where he retired in the mid-1990s. He worked hard to support his wife and family, and anyone else who needed help. After retirement, he spent his time at home being Mr. Fix-It, working on hot rods and spending time with his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Lonnie had a passion working on cars and loved his family more than anything. Lonnie would tell you his wife Phyllis, who he called Curly, was number one. He loved to take his kids and grandkids fishing, go to car shows and sprint car races every Saturday night with them, and attend every sporting or school event the kids were involved with. He was always supportive and could be easily heard over the crowds cheering his special cheer which really cannot be described with words, you just had to be there.
Lonnie is survived by his loving wife Phyllis Sowell, his children Mark Sowell and his wife Angie and Andrea Hollingsworth, his grandchildren Justin Sowell, Jason Sowell and his wife Jennifer, Tara Hollingsworth, Haley Hollingsworth, Amanda Sowell, and Jack Sowell, his great-grandchildren Sophia Sowell and Kinsey Combs, his sister Mitchell Caves, and numerous other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
