Mabel Elizabeth (McCawley) Swinney, much loved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, employer, and friend passed away September 20, 2014 at Grove Integris Hospital. Mabel was born on October 21, 1915 in Fayetteville, AR, the second of ten children of Elmer and Rose McCawley. She was a star basketball player in high school and a loving caregiver to all her siblings. Mabel graduated from Boynton, OK High School in 1933.
Mabel and John Swinney met in Seminole, OK and took the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony in 1939. They were married 58 years until John's death in 1997. During their marriage they had two children, Joan and John Junior. They also gave eight foster children a home over a 10 year period. Mabel and John owned and ran Swinney's Hardware with their children for 75 years.
Mabel was a Girl Scout leader and a long time member of St. Francis Xavier Church and Church of the Madalene. She was an avid reader. She had a huge heart, and she loved to cook and feed the multitudes.
She never knew a stranger. Everyone loved Mabel because Mabel loved everybody.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband John Swinney, Sr. and her son John Swinney, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Joan Atkins, son-in-law Robert Atkins, her sister Wilma, her brother Eugene, 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to Catholic Charities or Salvation Army.
Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial at Church of the Madalene, 11:00 a.m. Thursday.
