Obituary

Madia Fern Rutherford Sontag was born on February 17, 1930, in Stroud, Oklahoma, the fourth of five children born to George and Ethel Rutherford. She attended Stroud Public Schools and graduated in 1948.

Following graduation, Madia married John Sontag, Sr. Together, they welcomed six children in under 8 years building a family that would remain at the center of her life.

Madia dedicated 42 years of service to what was then Bartlett Memorial Hospital in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Known for her consistency, honesty, resilience, and straightforward nature, she was a woman who spoke her mind, stood firm in her convictions, and approached life with strength and determination.

A faithful and devoted member of Sacred Heart Church for many years, Madia entered the Catholic faith in 1951. Her faith remained an important part of her life.

Madia enjoyed the simple pleasures, especially football and pizza, and she had a way of being true to herself in everything she did.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ethel Rutherford; her four siblings; her daughters, Anna Gonzalez and Patricia Whitetree; her son, Stephen Sontag; two beloved grandchildren, Cory Sontag and Sarah Jones Domres; and her great-grandson, Elliot Whitetree.

Madia is survived by her sons, John (Karen) Sontag and Phillip Sontag; her daughter, Catherine (Charles) Hamilton; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will cherish her memory.

Madia leaves behind a legacy of family, faith, hard work, honesty, and resilience. She will be remembered for her steadfast spirit, her direct words, and the love she held for those who were fortunate enough to know her.
