Obituary

Margaret M. Toomey died in hospice on December 31, 2012. She lived an active and full life for each of her 90 years.

Born Margaret Marie Kurbyweit in 1922 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, she spent her childhood in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Northern New Jersey. She graduated from Montclair High School in 1940, then, attended secretarial school. She went to work as a secretary in the insurance industry on Maiden Lane in lower Manhattan.

In 1945, she married Edward H. Toomey, of Flushing, New York. After securing employment with American Airlines in New York, they relocated to Tulsa in 1947. Here, they raised their family and cemented life-long friendships.

Peg and Ed were originally members of the Church of the Madalene, followed by active membership the Church of Saint Mary. In 1961, Peg volunteered to administer book tests in the new Catholic high school, Bishop Kelley. This led to over a decade of work as the school's administrative secretary. There, she touched the lives of hundreds of students in ways obvious and not, doing everything from compiling attendance records and grade point averages to preparing transcripts and college applications. Peg was a contributor to the early success of Bishop Kelley; following the progress of its scholastic and athletic achievements was a passion until the end of her life.

Ed retired in 1983; he and Peg spent their years traveling the world, playing golf and enjoying their family and friends. After Ed died in 2001, Peg spent her final years volunteering for the LaFortune Ladies Golf Association, the Church of Saint Mary and knitting caps for premature infants. There were no strangers in Peg's life; only friends she had not yet made. Once one became her friend, it was permanent.

She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Holt (Dennis Holt), of Orlando, FL; their daughters, Jennifer Holt and Michelle Barkofski (Steve Barkofski), also of Orlando and a son, John Schmit (Audrey) of Dallas. Peg was preceded in death by grandson Mark Holt, in 2005. Peg is also survived by two sons: Jim Toomey (Lisa), of Pasco WA, their children, Chris Toomey (Megan) of Seattle and Shannon Toomey of Bellingham, WA, and by son David Toomey, of Atlanta, and his two daughters, Julia Hurtado (David) of Atlanta and Amanda Toomey of New York. Peg was also blessed to see 4 great-grandchildren enter the world: Sophie, Luke and Sarah Schmit and Keira Barkofski. Peg's family was a source of boundless pride for her.
