Obituary

A celebration of life for Mary Carver Ashby, 80, will be held Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11 a.m. in Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, 9th and Yale, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mary died Wednesday in a Tulsa hospital after a lengthy struggle with ovarian cancer. An interment service will be held at a future date in Ada, Oklahoma.

Mary was born June 22, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of George L. Carver and Mildred Remy Carver.

Early in Mary's life, the Carver family moved to Austin, Texas where Mary finished her education. She attended the University of Texas and graduated with a master's degree in classical languages. Her major was Latin, and she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

In August 1954, Mary married John F. Ashby, a priest in the Episcopal Church. In 1959, Father Ashby became rector of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, Ada, Oklahoma. Father Ashby and "Mother Mary", as Mary was affectionately called, lived in Ada for over 20 years.

In Ada, Mary was a member of Saint Luke's choir. She was also involved in Ada Antics and Ada Community Theatre productions. An extremely talented dancer, she especially loved show music and the movies of the 1930's and 1940's.

The Ashbys remained in Ada until 1981 when John was elected bishop of the Diocese of Western Kansas and they moved to Salina, Kansas. In Salina, Mary served as editor of the diocesan newspaper, The Prairie Spirit. The Rt. Rev. Ashby retired in 1995 and the couple moved to Tulsa to be with their daughters and beloved grandchildren.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Anne Ashby Ghost Bear, Tulsa, and Elizabeth Ashby, Guadalupita, NM. She is also survived by one brother, George L. Carver, Tulsa, and three granddaughters, Sarah Anne McBride Wright, Jenny Elizabeth Jones McElroy, and Amy Katherine Jones Beaudoin. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, The Rt. Rev. John F. Ashby and her grandson, Matthew Michael McBride. Mary was blessed with five great-grandchildren who were the joy of her later years.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 2012, at St. Luke Episcopal Church, 4818 E 9th St, Tulsa.
