Mary Bolha Polak passed away on June 14, 2019 at Porta Caeli House in Tulsa, OK, from complications of a broken hip. She was born January 26, 1922 to Jacob Bolha and Marija (Gerbec) Bolha in Ig, Slovenia.
Mary & her parents moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada when she was 7 and lived in several Canadian cities. She married Stephan Polak (1922-2000) on July 17, 1948 in Hamilton, Ontario. Mary & Steve lived in various US cities during their marriage, but settled in Tulsa in the early 1970s for the remainder of their lives. Mary was a longtime member of the Church of Saint Mary, Tulsa.
Her interests included golf, gardening (she had a green thumb with houseplants), travel with several Tulsa tour groups, reading the Tulsa World every day, crossword puzzles, and bridge. She enjoyed being a member of a writers' club where she wrote many essays about her life. Mary cared for an invalid mother for years and then an invalid husband.
She loved dogs and had pictures of her own and of neighborhood dogs on her hearth. Her neighborhood was Denwood Estates where she lived for 47 years; she and Steve were the first owners of the house at the main entrance to Denwood. She loved the neighborhood and served the Homeowners' Association by holding several offices over the years. She made friends with all the neighbors and their children; she always had a candy dish ready for visits.
Mary was very proud of reaching age 97 and continuing to live in her house, healthy and alone, keeping her house up until she fell at home and broke her hip in late May and remained hospitalized or in hospice care until her death.
She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Stephan Polak. Steve and Mary were both only children and they had no children. Mary is survived by several cousins in Slovenia.
