Obituary

Mary Thetford, a cherished family matriarch, accomplished real estate broker, dedicated public servant, and talented artist, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025 at the age of 93. Born on July 29, 1932, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, to Inez Furr and Albert Furr, Mary lived a life defined by her unwavering commitment to her family, professional excellence, and a passion for bringing people together through her warmth and generosity.

Mary was first married to Jerry Bailey Thetford, with whom she raised two sons, Mark Stevan Thetford and John Michael Thetford. In 2003, she married longtime Senator Gene Stipe, sharing a loving partnership until his passing in 2012. Above all, Mary was the heart of her family. She hosted cherished Sunday dinners nearly every weekend, celebrating her grandchildren's milestones with boundless pride, including attending Dr. Mary Grace Harvey's white coat ceremony at the University of Oklahoma Medical School and Grant Thetford's graduation from TU Law School. She was especially proud of Paul Thetford, who received his degree in petroleum engineering, and Michael Thetford, who obtained his chemical engineering degree; she practically raised Michael when she lived next door, cooking him meals, taking him to basketball and tennis practices, and supporting him in countless ways. One of her proudest moments was witnessing her two sons, Mark and John, graduate from law school together and pass the bar exam together. Mary insisted they both pursue legal education, firmly believing it would open all doors for their future success. Her devotion extended to her daughter-in-law, Barbara Thetford, who survives her and is married to John, and to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, all of whom she nurtured with love and support.

Professionally, Mary was a trailblazer in the real estate industry, where she excelled as a broker at McGraw Davidson in Tulsa. Her keen business acumen, dedication to her clients, and deep knowledge of the market earned her a stellar reputation over decades of service. She guided countless families and businesses through property transactions with integrity and expertise, leaving a lasting impact on the Tulsa real estate community. Beyond real estate, Mary's commitment to public service was remarkable. She served as Tulsa County Democratic Co-Chairman in the early 1970s, was appointed by Governor Bellmon to the Tulsa County Housing Authority, and by Governor George Nigh to the Oklahoma Tourism Commission, which managed Oklahoma State lodges. As a U.S. Trustee for the Bankruptcy Court of the Northern District of Oklahoma, she oversaw significant cases, including those involving the Hilton Hotel and other hospitality industry debtors. Her involvement in the 1976 Democratic Presidential Convention as a Rules Committee member was a highlight, particularly her joy in hosting soon-to-be First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

Mary's passion for travel enriched her life and those around her. She embarked on memorable international journeys, including trips to Europe and San Miguel, Mexico, often sharing these adventures with family and close friends. Her generosity shone through in family vacations she funded to Los Cabos, the Virgin Islands, The Breakers in Palm Beach, Atlantis in the Bahamas, and numerous spa retreats in California, creating treasured memories with her beloved granddaughter, Dr. Mary Grace Harvey, and other loved ones.

An accomplished amateur artist, Mary created over 50 paintings, many of which are displayed at her celebration of life, reflecting her creative spirit. Her love for community extended to her time at Cedar Crest Country Club, where she built lasting friendships and hosted countless gatherings, including festive Christmas celebrations.

Mary was a proud Democrat, actively supporting campaigns for Jimmy Carter, Jim Edmondson, Mike Turpen, Bill Clinton, George Nigh, David Walters, and others. Her political engagement and close-knit relationships with longtime friends brought her immense joy, often shared over weekly breakfasts with cherished companions.

Mary is survived by her sons, Mark and John (Barbara) Thetford; her grandchildren, Grant (Amber) Thetford, Paul (Erin) Thetford, Michael Thetford, and Dr. Mary Grace (Dr. Kody) Harvey; her great-grandchildren, Jack Thetford and Anne Thetford; and her sister, Carol (Monty) Miller. She was predeceased by her older sister, Billie Heckmaster, who passed away in March 2025.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice in Mary's honor. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mary's legacy of love, family devotion, professional achievement, and vibrant spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the Tulsa community she so deeply enriched.
