Obituary

Mary Ann L. "Maw" Wilcox, 90, passed away Monday, December 1st, 2014 in Tulsa, OK with her family at her side.

She was born on October 17th, 1924 in Tulsa, OK to the late Joseph A. & Gertrude LaFortune. In 1942, she graduated from Central High School and later attended Northwestern University.

While in high school she met the love of her life, Homer Wilcox, Jr. They were married in 1947 and promptly started a family in Tulsa. Their house was constantly churning with their six children, numerous Labrador Retrievers, and anyone who just wanted to stop by to say hello.

Mary Ann had a huge heart that she shared with all of her family and true friends. She was always involved in a card game, attending weekly games of Bridge with her "card" friends. This was later extended when the family gave her an iPad for her birthday. She was then able to sit in the comfort of her own home, sharpening her skills, so she could later remind family and friends that her quiet, sweet and docile demeanor took no mercy on whoever sat across the card table from her.

When she wasn't controlling a card game, Mary Ann was closely guarding the T.V. remote to make sure she didn't miss certain sporting events. She loved college football and basketball (especially The University of Tulsa and Notre Dame), golf and tennis. She was a loyal supporter of the University of Tulsa football and basketball teams and would regularly attend games with her brother Bob. In her later years she found great entertainment in pro football and basketball and would rarely miss watching a Dallas Cowboy or Oklahoma Thunder game on T.V.

Maw and Homer spent a good portion of their lives at the family cabin on Grand Lake in Disney, OK. Between dove dinners, boat rides, 4th of July's and walks out to the point, the cabin has provided a getaway and endless summer fun for five generations. Mary Ann preferred spending her weekends there regardless of the season as long as the "game" was on.

Mary Ann was a past member of the Tulsa Charity Horse Show, St. John Auxiliary, and the Junior League of Tulsa. She was a current member of Southern Hills Country Club, The T.U. Hurricane Club, Philbrook Museum and Christ the King Parish. There have been many organizations that she supported throughout her life, but she especially had a passion for the Boy Scouts of America and the United Way.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph & Gertrude LaFortune; her husband, Homer Frank Wilcox Jr.; her twin brother, Buddy LaFortune; her sister, Jeanne Henry Fair; and son, Larry Wilcox.

She is survived by her life-long best friend and brother, Robert J. LaFortune; her children, Frank Wilcox and wife Cindy; Steve Wilcox; Teresa Sweeney; Patty Walker and husband Hal; Tony Wilcox and wife Karen; her grandchildren, Chad Wilcox; Tyler Moore and husband Travis; Zach Walker and wife Sydney; Mitch Walker and wife Kylie; Austin Wilcox and wife Bethany; Allie Wilcox, and Johnny Wilcox. She also loved nothing more than spending time with her 6 great-grandchildren Tyler, Braden, Hunter, Mackenzie, Blythe and Eliza; numerous nieces and nephews and many beloved friends who will all miss her dearly.

The family would like to acknowledge Gail Slawson and Jackie Beavers for their dedication and support of Maw in a way that we can never thank them enough for. We are honored to have you in our lives.

Friends may honor Mary Ann's memory with contributions to Catholic Relief Services, PO Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297-0303 or to Catholic Charities, 2450 N Harvard Ave, Tulsa, OK 74115.
