Obituary

Surrounded by family and friends late Saturday afternoon, Maynard I. Ungerman slipped into eternity. The Tulsa icon, known for his intellectual curiosity and quiet, yet overwhelming, sense of humor had been battling illness for several years.

Ungerman was one of the founders of Neighbor for Neighbor along with Fr. Dan Allen. He was a man of great passion for the underserved of Tulsa and expended his energy to attain the values he held dear. Not only was he involved in Neighbor for Neighbor, but also in the founding of the Day Center for the Homeless and the expansion on the Indian Health Care System. Also served as long-time Chair of the Jewish Federation's Community Relations Committee and involved in Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry, Broadway Theater League, B'Nai Emunah Synagogue, United Way and Life Senior Services.

His greatest two passions were for his friends and family, including his great pride in his great grandchildren, Elissa, Ethan and Eliana. His energies for them were rivaled only by his demand for perfection in his successful practice of the Law. His respect for and practice of what he considered one of the most noble professions, were legendary. Many fellow Attorneys considered him one of the finest and most clever cross-examiners of witnesses in the State of Oklahoma, yet never did he cross the line into questionable ethics. He lived his values, working with people of all races, religions, and economic classes.

Many young lawyers trained at the firm formed by his father Irvine E. Ungerman, and which Maynard joined after serving in the JAG Corps of the Air Force. They learned of his analytical abilities and step-by-step method of dealing with complex issues. They were taught the dignity of the practice of the law.

Maynard trained at Stanford Law School, as well as Stanford undergraduate, and exhibited unwavering loyalty to that institution. Born in Topeka, Kansas, on December 5, 1929 while his father attended Law School. His parents, Hanna and Irvine, moved to Tulsa, where Maynard grew up and graduated from Will Rogers High School. Establishing some life long friendships along the way, his passionate character drew him into a love of politics, Stanford sports, honoring his family and those who were less fortunate. He was a true humanist unable to characterize persons by their race, religion or financial status. His life's work was not only the practice of the Law but also trying to re-create Tulsa into a city of great benefit for all who lived here. Until the time of his demise, he never quit trying to help the underprivileged and the underserved in our City.

His awards and honors, too numerous to list, included several from Bar Associations, human service organizations, Community Relations awards and citations.

Survivors include his wife Judith, his four children: Bill Ungerman of Los Angeles, Karla Ungerman and her husband Kevin McCraw, Rebecca Ungerman, and Gregory Falconetti and his wife Annabelle, all of Tulsa. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Mary Young of
Tulsa and his grandchildren: Elissa Ungerman, Ethan Falconetti and Eliana Falconnetti, and sister Rowena Ungerman Galerston of Montgomery, Texas.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., at Congregation B'Nai Emunah Synagogue. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
