Michel Simon "Mike" Medawar Jr., devoted, loving husband, father and "poppa" was called home to God on July 15, 2025. He was 88 years old.
Born on August 14, 1936, in New Orleans, Louisana, he was the only child of Michel and Johanna (Jenny) Medawar. He was surrounded by an extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
His upbringing was modest but abundant in resourcefulness, hard work, and commitment to family and faith.
As a youth he loved to ride his cruiser across town to the Mississippi River and enjoyed fishing with his father for speckled trout and red fish.
Mike attended Jesuit High school, earned a Bachelor of Science degree, Summa Cum Laude, from Loyola University, New Orleans, in 1957. He met the love of his life Mary Ann at his cousin Josie's birthday party. They married on June 14, 1958, while he was attending medical school at L.S.U. School of Medicine. He earned his doctorate in medicine in 1961 and completed his residency in 1966.
Post residency he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. In 1967, he left his wife and 2 young children in New Orleans and served in Viet Nam at the Ninth Medical Laboratory, Saigon, as Clinical Pathology Consultant to Commanding General of the 44th Medical Brigade. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for his service.
In 1969, he moved the family to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he practiced at St. Francis Hospital until his retirement.
He had a love for Jaguar automobiles and enjoyed a longtime hobby of showing his cars. He amassed a collection of prizes to show for his efforts and enjoyment of preparing his automobiles for competition.
He was a man of quiet faith and lived his faith through his generosity, love, and kindness. He was a very charitable man, always giving to those in need. His friendships spanned many years.
More than anything, he loved his family. He recently celebrated 67 years of marriage with Mary Ann. He was devoted to his 2 children, his son-in-law, his 3 grandchildren and his 2 great-grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann, daughter Jeanne Medawar Hogreve(Brad) and son Mike; grandchildren, Conner Hogreve(Cate), Audrey Turner(Kevin), and Asa Hogreve(Victoria, fiance); great-grandchildren, Mason, and Simone.
